Nova Bass
Anglers fished the 2009 club classic tournament October 17th
and 18th on the Potomac River launching from Leesylvania
State Park. True to form the weather turned very poor the day
before the tournament and stayed nasty throughout the weekend.
Saturday the guys were welcomed by air temps in the low 40’s and a
misty rain all day along with a 10mph north wind. To add to the
difficulties the BASS Weekend series regional championship was
fishing the Potomac with 200 boats in the field. This made for some crowded waters and
much pressured fish. Despite the difficult conditions the Nova
anglers were able to put together limits for the day one weigh in.
Day one leader Chris McManus weighed a five bass limit of
11.41 lbs, second was Chris’ boater
John Malerich with a limit of
10.89 lbs, and third on day one
was George Hayn III with a 7.48 lb limit of bass. The guys reported
catching their fish on reaction baits in shallow grass beds not far
from the launch site.
Day two brought
15-25 mph north, north west winds and air temps in the 40’s again.
The low temps on day one and over night lows in the 30’s dropped the
water temperature enough to make conditions even tougher for day
two. Day one leaders Chris and John had a difficult time repeating
there shallow water pattern and faltered a bit. A few of the guys
made adjustments to deeper water and found limits of a little bigger
fish than the others. John Fravel and George Hayn III reported
finding a pattern on rocky ledges near creek channels in 6-15 feet
of water. George reported catching fish on a slow rolled spinner
bait on creek channel edges and John caught them on a football jig
crawled over rocks and wood near creek channels.
Congratulations
to the top finishers!

Nova Bass Update September 2009
NOVA Bass Anglers fished the September
tournament on the Potomac River launching from Leesylvania State
Park Sunday, September 27th. We had 11 boats show up and fish. The
day started with a light rain and light winds. As the day progressed
the sun began to show and the wind picked up slightly to maybe
10mph. Low tide was supposedly 8:45am for Mattawoman. Well the tide
never got low. The water was very high all day and made for some
tough Potomac river fishing.
We weighed in with nine limits coming to the scales. Most anglers
commented on the high water and catching fish on reaction baits in
the grass beds mid-river.
Congratulations to the top finishers:
1st Place: Steve Clary, 14.48lbs
2nd Place: John Fravel, 14.42lbs
3rd Place: John Malerich, 11.40lbs
Big Fish: John Fravel, 4.65lbs
NOVA Bass will fish the Club Classic October 17-18 on the Potomac
river launching from Leesylvania State Park.
Nova Bass Update August 2009
Nova Bass fished its sixth event of the season
Saturday August 22, 2009 on the Potomac River. We launched at
safe light and lightning. The weather was horrible the night
before and into the early morning right up until launch time with
loud thunder and abundant lightning. The hurricane off the
east coast caused for high tides and tough bites for most. It
is no surprise that the veteran Nova angler Chuck Perry came out on
top. Way to go Chuck!!!
We had a few nice limits of fish come to the
scales at weigh in time. Congratulations to top finishers:
1st place: Chuck Perry, 17.43lbs
2nd place: Omar Rivas, 13.05lbs
3rd place: Robert Richards, 9.82lbs
Big fish: Chuck Perry
Nova Bass next tournament will be Sunday,
September 27th on the Potomac River launching and weighing in at
Leesylvania State Park.
Nova Bass Update
July 2009
NOVA Bass Anglers fished its fifth tournament
of the year Sunday July 12th on the Potomac River, out of
Leesylvania State Park. The weather cooperated for the NOVA club
and fishing was good for the majority of the guys. Thirteen
limits out of seventeen anglers brought five fish limits to the scales.
Top finishers reported catching fish early on
moving baits and jigs in grass beds north and south of LSP.
Steve Clary took top honors with a 15.23 limit of bass. Steve
also claimed big fish honors for the fourth time this year with a
5.28lb Potomac slob.
Congratulations Steve on another win and big fish.
Second place was claimed by George Hayn III, this guy is red hot
just coming off a big team win in the St. Judes tournament with
fellow NOVA angler Brad Whitfield. George weighed in a five
bass limit weighing 13.98lbs. In a close third was John Fravel
with a five fish limit weighing 13.44lbs.
NOVA Bass will fish its sixth event Saturday,
August 22nd out of Leesylvania State Park.
NOVA Bass Anglers fished its third club tournament of the year
Sunday May 17th out of Leesylvania State Park on the Potomac
River.
The weather forecast called for gusting winds to 30mph. We
had a vote to fish or not at the ramp before safe light due to the
severity of the days weather forecast. A six to five victory
to fish won and we launched at 5:55am. The wind cooperated until
9:30am and then started to blow steady at 20mph out of the NNW.
This made the river a disaster because the tide was coming in and
the wind was going against making for rough seas!!!
We weighed in at 4pm with all boats and passengers accounted for.
Congratulations to the top finishers.
1st Place: Don Cook 12.50
2nd Place: George Hayn III 11.99
3rd Place: Chuck Perry 11.90
Three more 10lb+ bags were also weighed in, all with four fish.
Most fish reportedly caught on reaction baits in the grass. Also,
fish were reported caught on hard cover.
NOVA Bass fishes its next tournament Saturday June 6th out of
Rivers Rest on the Chickahominy River.
Nova Bass Anglers fished the second club
tournament of the season Saturday, April 11th on the Potomac River.
We launched from Leesylvania State Park at safe light 6:45amish. The
day started with light rain and light winds. As the day progressed
the sideways rain and gusting wind became a very big factor. The
main river was super rough and not fun to navigate. Top finisher
reported catching a limit and culling throughout the day fishing
hard cover with crank baits and jigs.
Congratulations to the top finishers:
1st - John Fravel, 19.04 lbs
2nd - Steve Clary, 14.47 lbs
3rd - Rodney Upchurch, 14.40 lbs
Big Fish - Steve Clary, 6.28lbs
Steve is on a roll this year. He has weighed in two 6lb+ fish in the
first two events!
Nova Bass Anglers fished the first club
tournament of the 2009 season Saturday March 21st on Lake Anna out
of High Point Marina. We had 11 boats and 18 participants in total.
Also, a few guests got in the big fish pot. We had a great time
Friday prefishing and enjoying the camaraderie in the evening with a
small cookout.
Saturday we launched at 6:50am in a balmy 30 degree air temperature.
We all made it back safe at 3:00pm for the weigh in. We weighed in
23 fish for a total of 39.39lbs. Most fish were caught on light line
finesse tactics except for the fist place weight. The top finisher
reported a late afternoon shallow water power fishing bite.
Congratulations to the top finishers:
1st - Steve Clary with four fish for 10.61lbs
2nd - Craig Armstrong with four fish for 6.94lbs
3rd - John Malerich with four fish 6.07lbs

Federation
Tournaments You Should Know About!
They are the Mr. Bass
Tournament, The Chapter Team Tournament, and the Region 1 Fall
Classic.
You can win entry in the Mr. Bass Tournament
by being one of the two best fishermen in Nova Bass Anglers.
The Chapter Team Tournament is a two day tournament at Kerr
Reservoir and six of our club members will have the opportunity to
fish it. Region 1 hosts a Fall Classic Tournament for anglers
that are in the top 20 at the end of the
season.
Winning any of the Federation Tournaments
listed above will put you on the Virginia State Team. The Virginia
Team is composed of the top two finalists from the Mr. Bass
tournament, the four top finalists from two Chapter Team Tournament
(Region 1 and 9), and the top two individuals from the Fall Classic
Tournament.
The Virginia Team will fish the Interstate Tournament and have their
expenses paid for (within limits). It’s
a very prestigious opportunity for TBF members—and it takes a lot of
fishing success to get there.
Our own Rob Richards has made the Virginia Team by qualifying
for, and winning the Chapter Team
Tournament at Kerr Reservoir earlier this year.
Let’s wish Rob the best of luck upcoming at the Interstate
Tourney.
Also keep an eye in club standing for Club Kudos and trophies and
eligibility for the next Six Man team and Mr. Bass. Good luck to
everyone and let's have fun! Its a great club.
